Plants, wrapped in living moss

Kokedama is where this studio started. A plant, its roots formed into a ball of soil, wrapped in moss and bound with twine. No pot and no saucer. Just a small living sculpture that sits on a shelf, mounts to a wall, or hangs in the air. Each one is handmade in our studio in Star, Idaho, for homes around Boise and the Treasure Valley, and we ship them nationwide.

A single kokedama, a plant growing from a ball of moss

The Japanese art of the moss ball.

Ko-ke-da-ma. Literally, moss ball. It came out of Japanese bonsai practice, and the idea is to take the plant out of the pot entirely: roots packed into a ball of soil, wrapped in a skin of living moss, tied off with twine.

What you end up with is small, self contained and completely alive. A pot hides the plant. A kokedama makes the whole thing the art.

Kokedama walls, for something living

Not every space wants a preserved wall. A kokedama wall mounts individual moss-wrapped plants directly to the surface, no irrigation required. Pull one off for its soak, put it back, or swap it for something else entirely.

Three habits and it thrives

Kokedama needs a little attention, not a lot. Three simple habits keep one thriving for years.

Soak it

Every couple of weeks, sometimes just once a month, submerge the whole moss ball in water and leave it there until the bubbles stop. Let it drain. That is the entire watering routine.

Light it

Bright indirect light suits most kokedama. Succulents want it sunnier. Ferns and pothos are perfectly content somewhere shadier.

Live with it

Set it in a dish, rest it on a stand, or hang it. As the plant grows we are happy to re-wrap it for you. Every kokedama we sell ships with a care tag naming the plant and exactly what it wants.

Bring your team. We'll bring the mess.

We haul in the moss, the plants, the tools and the drop cloths, run the whole session, and clean it up before we go. You just get people to the table. Everybody leaves holding something they made.

What is a kokedama?

Kokedama means "moss ball" in Japanese. It grew out of bonsai practice: a plant’s roots are packed into a ball of soil, wrapped in living moss, and tied with twine, so the plant lives without a pot.

How do I care for a kokedama?

Every couple of weeks, sometimes just once a month, soak the whole moss ball in water until the bubbles stop, then let it drain. Most kokedama like bright, indirect light. Every kokedama we sell comes with a care tag naming the plant and what it needs.

Can I learn to make my own kokedama?

Yes. We run public kokedama workshops around the Treasure Valley (dates are on our events page, and sometimes on Eventbrite, Instagram, and Facebook), and we bring private and corporate kokedama workshops to offices and event spaces in the Boise area.

Do you make kokedama walls for businesses?

Yes. A kokedama wall mounts individual moss-wrapped plants directly to a wall with no irrigation. Each plant comes off for its soak and goes back up. Send us a photo of your space to start.
